Applying for OHP? New rules start Jan. 1, 2027.
Why this site exists: The state explains the new OHP rules across more than a dozen documents. This site puts what applicants need in one place, in plain words. Each page lists its official sources.
Have medical bills? Read this before Jan. 1, 2027.
Through Dec. 31, 2026, OHP can help with medical bills from up to 3 months before you apply.
Starting Jan. 1, 2027, it is 1 month for most adults ages 19 to 64.
The short version
- What's new: Starting Jan. 1, 2027, many adults ages 19 to 64 must meet new work or activity rules to get OHP.
- Good news: Many people already meet them, or don't have to.
- When OHP looks: The month before you apply.
- Records first: OHP checks its own records, like payroll and school records, before it asks you for anything.
Meet the rules any one way
- Income: Your household brings in $580 or more a month.
- School: You go to school at least half-time.
- 80 hours: You spend 80 hours a month on work, volunteering, school, or job training. Add them up.
You may not have to if you
- Are pregnant, or were in the last 12 months
- Care for a child 13 or younger, or for someone with a disability
- Have a serious or disabling health condition
- Are American Indian or Alaska Native
- Were in foster care at 18 and are under 26
There are more reasons. OHP checks some reasons itself. For others, you just tell OHP. See every reason
What to do
- Take the 1-minute check. Your answers stay on your device.
- Apply online, by phone, in person, or on paper.
- Answer every question about work, school, and volunteering. If a reason fits you, tell OHP.
Bottom line
If you think you qualify, apply. If OHP says no, you can apply again any time.
